wednesday thoughts

Today I will be fucusing on vis com again and picking one of my pieces to evolve, so looking forard to that.

Just return from my walk with the dog. I often use this time to reflect on things in the world. This time is more often than not useful, however sometimes, it can darken my day.

Today I was thinking of a show a watched on Sky arts about graffiti, it kept saying graffiti is the new in thing.. Seriously it did. Do not get me wrong the likes of banksy is to be honest, impressive, but i feel that is down to the political  irony he uses.

banksy, stenciled, with word play
wtf? bad tag.
Now the only graffiti that comes to mind round here is the words " welcome to hell" personnel i like that one, seems  fitting for the area. The rest however appears to be just pure shit, ie tags or even worse johnny waz ere with kyle.   Tags to me are like the human form of dog piss. marking territory, seriously guys have we not evolved.

maybe i could collect photos of tags and edit them in to some interesting collage? i will keep that on in mind..

Vis Comm

OK i mentioned i would upload photos from yesterday session. Remember these piece are experimental, and are not in any means the final product. as i said yesterday i found it quite fun, experimenting with enlarging and making negatives of my work.

Begining of week3

I am under the impression that this week I am  looking at Vis comm.. There is a part of me that is interested in this side of art, but like i mentioned earlier, the whole Mac thing gets to me..

I will be honest with you.. my black dog is here and you could show me the prefect world and i would find fault with it, it is a huge struggle just to get out of bed, not that i like sleeping, its i see no point in being around so sleeping removes that option...

anyway, this video is from Zoo kid. they are no longer called that, but the lads voice reminds me so much of early Billy Bragg stuff. I love the gritty realism of his voice.. it must be the 80's kid in me, although i am technically a 90's kid, i still love it.

ok. thats day one over with.. Kind of liked the freedom we had with it. We had to play around with letters ie stencils, creating shapes etc, moving on to create abstract imagines , i actually created a lot, well about 10 pieces.will upload later.

Black dog still around,  I find it a little difficult to fit in amongst a group of 19yrs olds espically when my mood is so low.. other crappy new is my Laptop is unrepairable, so a new one has been appointed, only after I pay the £250 excess, oh ok, nae worries...lol.

Bill Brandt

The more I have looked at perspective and the arts the more i realize how much i have used it in the past. The majority of my photography has been created with this in mind..

Bill Brandt: I had never of heard of him till yesterday, WOW fantastic, his angles of his nudes is so inspiring. the way the wide angle lens, slightly distorts
the figure.

Photography is still a very new medium and everything must be tried and dare... photography has no rules. It is not a sport. It is the result which counts, no matter how it is achieved. - Bill Brandt

Art and Music inspration. daniel Johnston

I have to say this guy is a true inspiration to me.... He has been knocked down by his illness so so many times and each time he comes back bigger and better. Although known for his music , he also sells lots of art work around the world..Some of his work can be see at Incognito Gallery 5 Stevenson Square, Northern Quarter, Manchester, its only showing a couple of more weeks, but well worth a view..

3d drawing. blocks

line daring using string and charcoal
today we fucused on lines and shapes.. felt a bit like I was back in school math lessons. all in all it was ok, it was nice to refresh a few idea's particularly about negative shape. I also enjoyed the line drawing using string and charcoal.

constructed blocks, which we then draw.

Fine Art

Laptop still out of action and unlikely to return. dam dog and dam the glass of coke. Insurance company seem to want to pull the dam thing apart and fix it.. Its a £900 multi media laptop. from my amateur pc repair skills, i found the motherboard to be fried, the built in mouse and graphic cards are also goosed.

The other bad thing about the insurance company is, if they need to replace it( which is what i think they will need to do) they do not return your hard drive. I regularly back any of my work up on an external hard drive, but still there is a few things on there that have not been backed up..

So last week I was doing fine Art. I love fine art, as an observer, but as an artist i find it difficult to draw how i see things. I love art and the whole history and the idea's which evolved around a piece. So for a large part I enjoyed the subject. Would i pick it as my main subject? I would have to say unlikely but would not rule it out at this stage.

The subject we are doing this week is 3d art. Seriously this was going to be my subject. I love pottery, molding and sharping clay into a design. but from distant viewing of the other group, clay does not come into play this week, nor does building sculptures etc,  I also noticed a heap of drawings.  Whether this is going to be the subject for me is to be seen. although deep down I am so wanting to better myself with clay.

The other two subjects are textiles and Viscom. Textiles, looked pretty interesting from a distant, but it not the way i intend to go. Viscom, Love photography seriously I do,

I take photo's daily, I am also pretty good at photoshop etc. illustrator however i find difficult and at times fiddly, but then again i was using a Mac. Mac's are the main platform which the course uses. I find them so so annoying, they try too hard to be so different, which alienates new users and lets be honest the whole apple fan base can be a little creepy at times, but I guess you get use to them with time.

Day 3. 2D

Only a short post today.. We focused on measurement with a 3d object and then drawing them into a 2d piece... NOT FOR ME. i found the object were to small to convert, although once it was more of a free hand piece, i started to feel comfortable...

It was also explained to me the purpose of this blog, which is what i am doing, but it can also highlight some of my likes and inspirations

So first inspiration. Banksy... (Banksy website click here)

I am not a graffiti art nor do i wish to be... but I admire the humour and spirit of his work is inspiration .

Day 2, Sonic Cartography

I had to explore the intersection of drawing and sound, visual noise.

A small example of the sounds we used

At 1st I experimented with a 3d element.

Once I complete a few of these pieces, I tried to focus on different individual areas. in some cases turning 3d in 2d via a photocopier .

Once i had choose a final piece, I then started to make it in to a poster. the photo, does not do it justice sorry.

Day 1, Ideas and development

Morning Session.

With a fellow student we had to select and wrap a series of objects found around the studio.

We picked a skeleton.

We then went about wrapping and Binding the skeleton with various object and materials

Suicidal bound

Drag
Bondage

We continued to wrap and add objects till the object was not recognisable.

Alien

Alien

At this stage we completely wrapped the object in paper.

Holy Cow

Once we had done this we, recorded an image of our sculpture, with charcoal.

Afternoon session.

Unwrapping.

individually we had to unwrap a piece retaining the quality of the paper and tape.

I then had to construct  2d and 3d pieces, incorporating the visual potential of the paper and tape.
